An Integrative Approach to Counseling and Wellness
by Dr. Suzan K. Thompson, Ph.D., Licensed Professional Counselor

Are you feeling uncertain or lost about your direction in life and want a safe place to figure out what you want to do?

You might be feeling overwhelmed or anxious.

Or maybe you've experienced something distressing or traumatic and you can't make sense of it.

People seek counseling for many reasons.

One of us can help!

Most of us want to figure out things on our own, but life has become more and more complicated. Counseling can be a safe place for you to explore what is happening and collaborate on productive steps to take. Clinicians at Integrative Counseling & Wellness focus on a blended, integrative approach as we help individuals and will assist you with working toward healing and growth.

Dedicated to providing cutting edge, safe and effective counseling, tools and strategies and training for:
  • anxiety and stress
  • career and life transitions
  • grief and loss
  • depression
  • healing trauma

Unhealed events in our lives can keep us from moving on. we offer proven, integrative and holistic strategies for thriving in work and relationships throughout the lifespan.

Find out more about each of us by reading their information below.

Rapid Results
What most of us don’t realize is that problems are often a reflection of disrupted patterns within the mind-body system. By addressing conflicts in thought and emotion while harnessing the energy systems of the body, energy psychology allows for faster processing of a variety of emotional concerns.

You'll learn mind-body skills to self-regulate between sessions, reducing symptoms of stress, anxiety, anger, trauma, guilt, shame and depression. The focus is on regaining awareness, rebalancing your mind-body and energy systems and reframing your thoughts to bring about rapid positive change.

If you want to meet Dr. Thompson informally and find out about Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) without committing to counseling and therapy, try the monthly EFT GROUP! It's scheduled for the 3rd Saturday of each month -- by donation.
Spaces are limited, to please text to let us know you're attending.

My practice is committed to helping clients like you.

We offer sessions by telehealth and appointment only in Virginia Beach -- serving Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Hampton, Newport News in Hampton Roads/Coastal Virginia.

Integrative Counseling and Wellness is a small, quiet setting.  Our therapy offices are safe places to collaborate to get your life and relationships back on track.  It’s time to feel better.  Help is here.

About Suzan K. Thompson, Ph.D., LPC
I hold a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in Counselor Education and Supervision from the University of Virginia.  Since completing my master's degree in counseling, I have worked as a counselor, counselor educator, consultant and therapist.  I have been a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) since 1996 and opened my private practice services in 2001. Additionally, I've been trained in Multidimensional Healing, Clinical Emotional Freedom Techniques and am a SoulCollage® Trained Facilitator.

As a Licensed Professional Counselor, I specialize in working with adults who have experienced anxiety, grief and loss, relationship concerns, career counseling, depression and trauma. We'll work together to develop effective tools & strategies to cope with your life's challenges.

I take an educational approach to therapy and encourage you to learn more about the kind of work we will do together.  My primary approach is a blend of the more traditional Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Relational Therapy and Solution-Focused Therapy as well as integrative modalities like Emotional Freedom Techniques that emphasize focusing on strengths.  I also use a blend of mindfulness- and body-based practices, guided imagery.

We'll work together to develop effective tools and strategies to cope with your life's challenges. My priority is to collaborate with you, creating a safe place for you to explore your thoughts and feelings so you can access your courage to heal. I believe in treating the whole person -- mind, body and spirit -- toward healing, transformation and growth.

When I'm not counseling or presenting on wellness, mindfulness and energy psychology workshops, I enjoy painting and creating SoulCollage® cards.

Looking for free or low-cost therapy?

HERE is a guide to finding it.

What If Your Therapist Had A Dog In The Office?
https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/decoding-your-pet/201501/what-if-your-therapist-had-dog-in-the-office
What's the difference? (From TherapyDogInfo.net)

 Therapy Dog
Provide therapeutic support to people other than the handler. Therapy dogs are permitted in schools, libraries, assisted living homes, hospitals and hospices. They have no special rights to be permitted in places where animals are not generally allowed. Therapy dogs, unlike service dogs, do not require special training, they only have to know basic obedience, be well-behaved, and pass a certification test. The need for documentation and identification is determined by the certifying organization and facilities that are visited.

Service Dog
Generally performs specific tasks for individuals with a disability, whether physical or psychiatric. There is no specific certification, registration, documentation or ID card for a service dog; they do, however, have special training. Service dogs may also be called guide, hearing, mobility, medical alert or psychiatric service dog,  They are permitted in businesses, motels/hotels and camps because they are considered a necessary assistance to a person, similar to a cane or wheelchair. Service dogs are also permitted in places with a “no pets” policy, although providers are only required to make reasonable accommodations.

Emotional Support/Comfort Dog
Provides emotional or therapeutic support to someone with a mental health diagnosis. Although they are essentially household pets and require no special training, certification or registration, they may be referred to as therapy, companion or comfort dogs. In order to be designated as an emotional support dog, a mental health professional must document the need for it. An emotional support dog has no special rights to be permitted in businesses, hotels, motels and camps in those with a “no pets” policy. If someone brings a comfort dog in a grocery store because they don’t want to leave it in their car, this is considered service dog fraud.
